There has been a lot of entertainment in the garden, especially now it’s really warming up. Lots of birds are about, and many are flying to and fro with nesting material or food.
The above image is a female blackbird on a nest in our front garden. I was careful not to get too close or stay for long, I just took a couple of shots and as you can see from all the green, not great ones. But there’s no way I was disturbing her further.
The photo is from a short time ago and she now has four baby chicks in the nest 🙂
We may also have a blackbird nest in the back garden. I saw a male blackbird potentially protecting a bush/nest site from another bird. There was definitely another nest nearby because we already have a blackbird collecting food and feeding two fledglings in the garden.
We did have a Collared Dove nest but it looks like it was predated by Magpies and they’ve left it now. I think the Doves have mated again and are probably nesting elsewhere now.
Many birds have been collecting nesting material from the garden. I have moss in a spiral feeder and this Fiesta Nester out for them.
A Blue tit collected some material and went into one of our nest boxes a while back, but I haven’t seen any further activity. Coal tits and Blue tits checked out our camera box, but didn’t go in. The boxes are in our Silver birch and they’re only just getting their leaves, so there probably isn’t enough cover… once all my new shrubs grow bigger we can move them somewhere better.
Greenfinches have taken a lot of material, but I think they’re nesting in another garden.
A male House Sparrow had a proper, falling through the air making a racket, fight with a Blue tit(?) over our Sparrow terrace and he went inside. But again, I’ve not seen further activity yet.
Most excitingly I think I saw two flirting Goldcrests, but I can’t be sure!
What are your birds up to, have you any tenants yet?
