Paddington is a spectacled bear. They are so named due to their facial markings which tend to circle the eyes. Spectacled bears live in South America and are the only bears there, they are the second largest land mammal in the area. They live in forested areas, they are active at night, and eat a mostly vegetarian diet.
The most upsetting fact is that they are an IUCN Red Listed species and their status is:
VULNERABLE to extinction.
[Edit] March 2016: Vote to help Spectacled Bears here: EOCA until March 15, 2016
Why are they vulnerable?
- Habitat destruction
- Persecution by local farmers who believe they are killing their animals and/or ruining crops
- Hunting due to local demand for body parts, and the international market
You can help protect habitat for these bears by donating to the World Land Trust DONATE HERE
I first came across this charity years ago when I was looking for new charities to support. I knew I wanted to donate to conservation and to help animals, but there are so many charities to choose from; how to you know where you money is best spent?
I chose the World Land Trust as one of my charities because Sir David Attenborough is a patron and you can see why HERE
Please do read the Daily Mail article, by Simon Barnes, I mentioned HERE and as Simon says “Please look after this bear. Please look after this planet. Thank you.”
P.S. If you’re wondering about the photo it’s of an old pillow case I still have from when I was a kid. I try and use my own images and I don’t have any spectacled bear pictures!
ETA: here’s another WLT article that didn’t seem to come up in my research. .. HERE
